She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay was a college student when she became fascinated by the production aspect of the broadcast media. Her career began working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the waste of one of members of juries. In the course of her duties she was dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the publicity business. DuVernay found a job immediately out college, as a young publicist for a studio. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999.
